Description

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) is excited to offer internship opportunities for nursing students in 2025. This program provides hands-on clinical experience in one of the leading academic medical centers in the country. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced nurses and healthcare professionals, gaining exposure to a wide range of nursing specialties and advancing their clinical skills while contributing to the highest quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care Assistance: Provide direct patient care under the supervision of registered nurses, assisting with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility.
  • Clinical Observation: Observe and assist in various nursing procedures, including medication administration, wound care, and patient assessments.
  • Charting and Documentation: Accurately document patient information in electronic medical records (EMR) and assist with updating patient care plans.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with nursing teams and multidisciplinary healthcare providers to ensure effective care delivery.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and families on health management, medication adherence, and discharge instructions under the guidance of nursing staff.
  • Assist in Nursing Rounds: Participate in nursing rounds and team meetings, contributing to patient care discussions and learning opportunities.
  • Maintain Hygiene and Safety Standards: Ensure that patient environments are safe, clean, and comfortable, adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training, workshops, and educational opportunities related to nursing practice and healthcare.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (BSN or ADN) with a focus on clinical practice.
  • Must have completed at least one year of nursing education, including clinical rotations, by the start of the internship.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR is required.
  • Availability for full-time or part-time internship positions during the specified internship period (typically summer, fall, or spring semester).
Experience
  • Previous clinical rotation experience in a hospital or healthcare setting is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in healthcare-related volunteer work or community service is advantageous.
Skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to patient privacy regulations.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and patient-focused attitude.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Proficiency with healthcare technology, including electronic health records (EHR), is a plus.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic healthcare environment.
