Description

The ONS Internship Program 2025 offers university students a unique opportunity to work alongside professional statisticians, data scientists, and analysts. Interns will support a range of statistical, analytical, and operational projects aimed at enhancing the quality of data used to inform public policy. This internship is designed to develop your analytical, technical, and research skills, providing insight into how national data is collected, analyzed, and reported to benefit the public.

Responsibilities
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Assist in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of large datasets, contributing to the development of accurate and reliable statistics.
  • Research and Support for Ongoing Projects: Collaborate with ONS teams on various projects, such as labor market analysis, population studies, and economic data reporting.
  • Data Visualization and Presentation: Create data visualizations, summaries, and reports to communicate complex findings to internal teams and the public.
  • Quality Assurance: Support quality assurance efforts by validating data and ensuring that methods meet high standards of accuracy and transparency.
  • Technical Documentation: Help prepare technical documentation, user guides, and research reports to support ONS’s work in providing accessible public data.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with different departments to understand various facets of data collection and analysis in support of ONS's mission.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate program in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Strong academic record with an interest in public policy, statistics, and data-driven decision-making.
Experience
  • Prior internship or experience in data analysis, research, or statistics is preferred but not required.
  • Experience working on projects with large datasets or familiarity with data analysis tools is a plus.
Skills
  • Analytical Skills: Strong data analysis skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with data analysis tools and software (e.g., R, Python, Excel, or other statistical software).
  • Communication Skills: Ability to present findings clearly through written reports, charts, and presentations.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to approach complex issues methodically, using critical thinking to provide effective solutions.
  • Team Collaboration: Able to work well in a collaborative team environment, both virtually and in person.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to work on diverse tasks and learn new skills as required.
