The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking highly motivated graduate students for its 2025 Internship Graduate Program. This program provides an exceptional opportunity for graduate-level students to gain hands-on experience and contribute to the Department’s mission of advancing energy innovation, ensuring national security, and promoting environmental sustainability. Interns will work on critical projects that shape the future of energy policy, science, and technology.

Responsibilities

Graduate interns will have the chance to engage in a wide range of tasks, depending on their area of expertise and the specific DOE office or laboratory to which they are assigned. Responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting research on emerging energy technologies, policy, and sustainability efforts.
  • Assisting in the development and analysis of energy policies and regulations.
  • Collaborating on projects related to clean energy, energy efficiency, environmental protection, or national security.
  • Supporting the evaluation and assessment of energy-related data, reports, and scientific publications.
  • Preparing technical documents, presentations, and research papers for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, conferences, and workshops to share ideas and solutions.
  • Engaging in hands-on laboratory work, field studies, or technical assistance projects, depending on the assigned office or lab.
  • Assisting in grant writing, data collection, and other administrative support functions as required.
Qualifications
  • Education: Must be currently enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s or Doctoral level) in a relevant field, such as energy policy, engineering, environmental science, public administration, physics, or related disciplines.
  • Academic Requirements: A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Specialization: Students with a background in energy systems, renewable energy, environmental policy, nuclear engineering, or data science are encouraged to apply.
Experience
  • Previous internship or work experience in the energy sector, public policy, research, or related fields is preferred but not required.
  • Academic coursework or research experience related to energy technologies, environmental studies, or policy analysis is highly beneficial.
Skills
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R, or Excel) is preferred for technical-focused interns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of energy systems, environmental regulations, or sustainability practices is a plus.
  • A strong interest in addressing energy and environmental challenges on a global scale
