Description

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Graduate Students Internship Program offers graduate students an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience and insight into federal regulatory and enforcement processes. Interns will work directly with experts in various CFPB divisions, developing skills in consumer protection, policy analysis, data analysis, and financial regulations. This program is aimed at those who are passionate about financial transparency and consumer rights, and who are interested in building a career within federal agencies or related fields.

Responsibilities

As an intern in the CFPB Graduate Students Program, you will:

  • Conduct research on consumer finance issues, financial policy, and regulatory matters.
  • Assist in drafting policy recommendations, reports, and memos for senior leadership.
  • Engage in quantitative and qualitative data analysis to support CFPB’s mission.
  • Participate in project teams, working alongside professionals on ongoing projects.
  • Provide support to various divisions, such as Research, Markets and Regulations, Supervision, Enforcement, and Fair Lending.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to evaluate and implement financial education initiatives.
  • Attend meetings and workshops with CFPB staff and external stakeholders.
  • Present findings, proposals, or research results in team settings and other forums.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program (Master’s or Doctoral) in Public Policy, Economics, Finance, Law, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Must have completed at least one year of graduate-level coursework by the internship start date.
  • Demonstrated interest in consumer finance, public service, or regulatory affairs.
  • Ability to work legally in the United States (U.S. citizenship required).
Experience
  • Relevant coursework or prior internship experience in public policy, economics, finance, law, or regulatory fields is preferred.
  • Experience in data analysis, research methodologies, and report writing is advantageous.
Skills
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze data and interpret findings related to consumer finance.
  • Research Skills: Proficient in research methods, including both quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Written and Verbal Communication: Strong ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in data analysis, reporting, and compliance activities.
  • Team Collaboration: Able to work effectively in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with statistical and data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, R, Stata) is beneficial.
