The National Park Service (NPS) Internship Program & Opportunities 2025 is designed to provide students and emerging professionals with practical experience in natural resource management, cultural preservation, education, and public engagement within the National Park Service. Interns will have the unique opportunity to work in national parks across the United States, gaining valuable skills, knowledge, and exposure to the operations of one of the nation’s most respected federal agencies. This program serves as an entry point for those interested in conservation, historical preservation, and park management careers.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with Natural and Cultural Resource Management: Support park staff in maintaining and protecting natural resources, wildlife habitats, and cultural sites within the park system. Tasks may include monitoring ecosystems, collecting data, and helping with conservation initiatives.
  • Public Education and Engagement: Work with park rangers and educators to deliver interpretive programs, lead guided tours, and develop educational materials for park visitors. Engage with the public to promote understanding and appreciation of park resources.
  • Support Visitor Services: Help manage visitor centers, assist with park operations, and provide information to visitors. Assist in developing and implementing special events, exhibits, and outreach programs.
  • Conduct Research and Documentation: Assist in research projects related to park history, wildlife, geology, or environmental science. Interns may be involved in archiving documents, conducting surveys, or participating in fieldwork.
  • Contribute to Park Operations: Provide administrative support and help maintain operational records. Tasks may include inventorying equipment, assisting with maintenance projects, and participating in team meetings.
  • Participate in Stewardship Activities: Help with park maintenance activities, including trail building, habitat restoration, and invasive species management.
  • Collaborate with NPS Staff: Work alongside professional staff members in various departments, gaining insights into park management, policy implementation, and park conservation strategies.
Qualifications
  • Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled as full-time students in an accredited college or university, preferably pursuing a degree in environmental science, biology, history, archaeology, education, park management, or related fields. Recent graduates may also apply.
  • Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old at the start of the internship program.
  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  • Academic Standing: Applicants should maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in an outdoor environment, which may include hiking, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
Experience
  • Previous Coursework: A strong academic background in areas related to natural resource management, environmental science, history, or public administration is ideal.
  • Volunteer or Work Experience: Previous experience volunteering with conservation organizations, environmental clubs, historical societies, or similar organizations is preferred but not required.
  • Fieldwork or Laboratory Experience: Experience with field research, data collection, or laboratory work is a plus, especially for applicants interested in resource management or scientific research internships.
  • Leadership and Community Involvement: Active involvement in leadership roles or community-based organizations will be considered a strong asset.
