Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) offers internship opportunities for students and emerging professionals to gain hands-on experience in wildlife conservation, management, and research. Interns will work alongside dedicated wildlife biologists, conservation specialists, and other professionals in preserving and protecting wildlife and their habitats across the United States. This internship provides valuable exposure to the operations of a federal agency focused on conserving fish, wildlife, and plants, while also contributing to sustainable environmental management practices.

Responsibilities

Interns will assist in various tasks related to the conservation and management of wildlife and habitats, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting with field surveys, data collection, and species monitoring activities.
  • Supporting habitat restoration projects and environmental assessments.
  • Conducting research on species population dynamics, migration patterns, and ecosystem health.
  • Assisting in the development of educational materials or outreach programs related to wildlife conservation.
  • Analyzing data and preparing reports to support ongoing conservation efforts.
  • Collaborating with USFWS staff to assess and manage protected wildlife areas.
  • Participating in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts when applicable.
  • Attending and assisting in meetings, workshops, or field visits related to conservation projects.
Qualifications
  • Enrollment in a degree program (undergraduate or graduate) in wildlife biology, environmental science, ecology, zoology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in wildlife conservation and natural resource management.
  • Knowledge of basic biological principles and ecological concepts.
  • Ability to work effectively in both field and office settings.
  • Familiarity with GIS, data analysis, and wildlife management tools is a plus.
Experience
  • Prior academic coursework or experience in wildlife biology, conservation, or environmental science is preferred but not required.
  • Fieldwork or research experience related to ecology or conservation is beneficial.
  • Previous internships or volunteer work in wildlife, environmental, or research organizations is an advantage.
Skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and, ideally, familiarity with GIS software.
  • Physical stamina for working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel to field locations may be required.
